"Founded in 1886, Gomez Cruzado is the smallest winery in the famed “Barrio de la Estación” or “Train Station District,” an area in the heart of Haro where Rioja as we know it was born. Gomez Cruzado is sandwiched between some of the most famous names in the region with Lopez de Heredia less than 20 feet away, La Rioja Alta to their left, and Muga to the right. Cruzado’s Rioja Blanco is made from 60% Viura, 35% Tempranillo Blanco, and small amounts of Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca. They farm biodynamically with minimal intervention in the cellar, and they aim to produce clean, classic Rioja wines that aren’t saturated with oak (as many Rioja wines are). In fact, this wine is aged in oak that is completely untoasted, a rare occurrence in Rioja. The result is an elegant, textural, fruity white with layers of honeycomb, herbs, flowers, pear, and melon, with a bright streak of lemon that cuts through the heart of it. This wine shines with white fish dishes and roasted chicken, and serving it with anything involving mushrooms would be like squeezing a lemon over the top of the dish."
