This delicious black walnut infused liqueur hails from Campania, Italy, and is named "Fra Amedeo" after the Franciscan friars who introduced the recipe to the family. The recipe has been handed down for generations and is now proudly in the hands of Fabio, the current winemaker. Only a small amount of this liqueur is produced, and it is truly unlike any other nocino. The palate drinks lighter in the beginning but grows in strength, and has notes of medicinal herbs, menthol, dark molasses, and nutmeg, with balanced sweetness, cleansing acidity, and a long bold finish. Fabio left his post-law school life in Rome to return home and help his father and grandmother farm their 2 hectares of Barbera and Aglianico vineyards and surrounding orchards. Each June, the family gathers husks from their organic black walnut orchard and infuses them into alcohol with cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, and once the infusion is satisfactory the liqueur is enriched with sugar syrup and aged in glass and stainless steel until bottling.
