Unfiltered Wine Club, April 2026, vintage 2023:

"On to the reds! Our first red is imported by Avant Garde Wine & Spirits and hails from Beaujolais, the southernmost wine producing region in Burgundy, France. Beaujolais is often considered to be its own region - completely separate from Burgundy, mostly because the soil composition is entirely different. Rather than Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that thrive in the more famous northern clay and limestone soils, Gamay and Aligoté are the main grape varieties in the south where the best vineyard sites sit on top of granite. Aux Ardent’s vineyards are certified organic, and the Fauve cuvée is stylistically accurate in my opinion; it’s a perfect example of what Beaujolais under $40 should be. The wine is slightly reductive upon opening, but after a few minutes in the glass, notes of beets, berries, plum, and fennel seed emerge. Medium in body, the texture is clean and glossy with soft tannins, and the juicy medium plus acidity swoops in at the end and cleans everything up. I like this wine with a slight chill, and the combination of acid and low tannins make for a perfect red to drink with or without food. My sommelier brain always jumps to food when I taste Gamay, and this one would pair famously with smoked pork or chicken with root vegetables, roasted duck with black rice and broccoli rabe, and grilled salmon with green beans. The wine is bright and fresh, and as long as you avoid extremely spicy or creamy foods, it will be a hit."
