Mencía from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, Spain; medium to medium plus bodied and dry with notes of red cherry, blueberry, black plum, and wild muscadine, layers of fine ground black pepper, meat, and sour cream, with savory/vegetal undertones, medium acidity, dry firm tannins, and lingering black cherry on the finish. Organic
From Unfiltered Wine Club, October 2024:
"Our last wine is another from Spain, an organic medium bodied red made in Ribeira Sacra, Galicia. Viña do Burato is made up of 90% Mencía, an indigenous grape to the region, and 10% Merenzao, which is also referred to as Trousseau or Bastardo and hails from the Jura region of France. This wine leans savory with some notes of blueberry, plum, and red cherry, with layers of sour cream, cured meat, and black pepper. I got hints of concord grapes that reminded me of the wild muscadines that used to grow in my grandmother’s backyard. Needless to say, the wine feels comfortable and cozy. This is another grilled food-friendly wine (I’m seeing an unintentional but common theme here...perhaps it’s my subconscious desire for grilling this time of year). Instead of contrasting the grilled flavor profiles like the Clos d’Audhuy Toujours Plus does with all of its fruity, chillable goodness, this wine complements the smoky and earthy flavors created from charring with its vegetal, peppery, and meaty tones. With the lingering black cherry finish, it’s like a complete food-pairing package!"
