Unfiltered Wine Club, July 2025:
"Our last wine for July is a homage to those of you who love big, bold, hearty reds. Hailing from the Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Appellation of Tuscany, this banger Sangiovese is a touch atypical in style because it didn’t see any oak during the winemaking process. The wine fermented for a staggering 75 days in 1000 liter spherical amphora vessels. After racking it was returned to the same vessel to rest for another year, followed by 6 more months in the bottle. “Harenae” is the Latin word for sand or Terracotta, which is not only the material used to make the amphora, but just so happens to be the exact soil the vines grow in. Casa Emma has a special focus on regenerative farming practices, environmental sustainability, waste reduction, and organic and biodynamic viticulture. The wine itself is full-bodied with notes of cherry fruit leather, banana bread, cooked blackberries, and wet tobacco. With air, more hints of balsamic, leather, spice, and dried herbs emerge, and the rustic undertones, dry angular tannins, and medium plus acidity create perfect balance and food-friendliness. This is for those of you who enjoy flavorful, rich foods such as fatty steaks, spicy pasta dishes, meatloaf (even vegetarian versions!), and bacon cheeseburgers, but it will also pair famously with balsamic-glazed chicken, pizza, lentils and beans, creamy mushroom soups, roasted eggplant and zucchini, and hard aged cheeses. If you’re preparing your dish around the wine, consider seasoning with herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, and basil. This wine is ready to drink now but would also be great to cellar for another 5 or so years."
