Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain; medium bodied and dry with notes of blackberry preserves, stewed black table grapes, overripe black cherry, leather, and earth, with medium acidity and dry, firm tannins. Lutte Raisonnée
Unfiltered Wine Club, September 2025:
"Akutain Cosecha hails from the higher-elevation slopes of the Rioja Alta appellation in Spain, where grower/winemaker Jon Peñagaricano farms his vines organically using only estate fruit. He maintains a deep respect for his family’s traditions and is passionate about promoting biodiversity in his vineyards. Made from 100% Tempranillo, this cuvée is made without oak - fermenting and aging all in stainless steel - so what you taste is pure fruit and terroir, not vanilla or other heavy influences from wood. The nose opens with rich blackberry preserves, stewed black table grapes, and a note of overripe black cherry, layered with earth and soft leather tones. On the palate it’s medium-bodied and has firm tannins that grip just enough, while balanced acidity keeps it from feeling weighed down. It’s a lighter, fresher style of Rioja that feels more about vibrancy than weight, making it incredibly versatile at the table. Pair it with grilled chicken thighs and herbs, seared tuna with roasted vegetables, or lentil stew with mushrooms and greens. It also works beautifully with meat and cheese plates, charred peppers, or simple margherita pizza where the acidity and fruit keep things lively. Serve it slightly cool to soften the tannins and let those juicy black fruit notes sing."
