Gual from Las Islas Canarias, Canary Islands, Spain; light plus bodied and dry, flinty with notes of stone fruit, white cherry, pineapple, smoke, and jasmine, with balanced acid, a silky texture, and subtle notes of pear on the finish. Organic
Founding winemaker Juan Jesus was a professor at the University of Tenerife and began the indigenous species movement in Tenerife and the other Canary Islands. When he started, there were only 3 hectares of Gual that existed, nearly extinct, and now there are 12! He was the guy who pushed to rip up the international varieties that weren't serving the communities well, and plant more native species that naturally thrived in the unique environment and expressed the true terroir of the islands.
