Unfiltered Wine Club, July 2024
"Moving a bit further north in Italy to Umbria, Della Staffa’s Liatikò is made from 100% Aleatico (“Liatikò” is the old Greek spelling). This wine is deep and dark and would love a Ribeye. Or for those of you who don’t eat animals, I think some grilled portobello mushrooms would be excellent with this wine. I tasted notes of overripe blueberry and loads of stewed black fruits, with earthy undertones and hints of citrus pith. The big dry tannins on the finish offer structure and grip, making this wine perfect for food. The Conestabile della Staffa family history dates back through the Middle Ages, and the family literally lives in a castle that was constructed during that time period. No chemicals of any kind have ever touched the soil here, and they farm and produce without any technology. We should plan a visit there someday!"
